Alumno are pleased to be working again with the architects Carson & Partners, who are themselves Glasgow based. It has been very much highlighted in the news that there is a lack of Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) in Glasgow. Students were even handing out flyers to warn prospective students at open days to avoid studying in Glasgow because of this problem.
Hopefully Alumnos` new proposed scheme at the corner of St George Street and Grant Street can help to ease this problem and free up other housing for families.
The site is on the edge of and within Woodside Conservation area. Carson & Partners will therefore be using traditional masonry, quality fenestration and keeping the building to an appropriate scale. The site is currently clear the previous premises, which were used as a car showroom having been demolished
It is proposed that a new PBSA should be built on the site with a lively ground floor layout using a shopfront style. Students would have the use of a reception, cinema room, common room, gym and laundry. To the back and viewable through the entrance would be a large landscaped courtyard. On the proposed 5 floors above would be groups of 7 cluster flats of 5 rooms with 9 studios grouped around the building core.
There will be a public consultation in the New Year and the Carson / Alumno team look forward to hearing feedback and any concerns from the local community. Once these views have been taken onboard and considered a planning application will then be submitted to the council later in the year.
It is hoped the influx of students will be welcomed as a financial and social benefit to the community. This is the 8th PBSA scheme Alumno have worked with Carson & Partners, the first 7 schemes have genuinely enhanced the locality they have been built in, this scheme is expected to be no different to those successful placemaking projects.
