Student Engagement
Meeting students to learn about their experiences first hand is crucial to helping us create the best environments.
By meeting with students in their third year of study at Sheffield Hallam University, Alumno found out more about their first hand experiences of living in student accommodation. Alumno redeveloped part of The Park Hill estate, an iconic Grade II listed development, the largest listed structure in Europe, and a landmark on the Sheffield skyline.
As part of Phase 3 of the site’s redevelopment, Alumno created unique student accommodation for 356 students.
Alumno took local architecture students around the site and gave them talks on the history of the development. This was followed by lunch at the South Street Kitchen, which is already part of the Park Hill complex.
Setting the students of Chelsea College of Art & Design a challenge to establish a programme for the Three Mills site in Stratford was an exciting opportunity to examine the key attributes of student housing and propose new models for student accommodation, and to develop this within a wider proposal defining the relationship between public and private spaces within a single site.
Hosting a lunch and brainstorming sessions with students from Birmingham City University allowed us to discuss what they want from their communal spaces.
During the construction of Alumno’s first All Saints Green development, we hosted site visits and architect’s talks for students at Norwich University of Arts who were studying architecture. The aim was not only to help inspire a future generation of architects, but also to provide experience of architecture and development in practice.
