Alumno has been sponsoring and supporting the national photographic organisation Photo North for the past 5 years.

The Photo North Festival showcases works from renowned photographers, featuring talks, screenings, and book signings throughout the annual festival weekend. The festival was founded by photographic curators Peter Dench and Sharon Price, who established the non-profit national organisation to celebrate photography across the UK.

Alumno, who specialise in developing student accommodation, are passionate supporters of the arts, with a strong focus on emerging photography talent. In addition to the festival, they play an active role in backing the young photography competition, which is a key feature of the three-day event.

The festival is also supported by members of Channel 4’s Senior pictures team, who delve onto the archives to present unseen photographs from iconic films such as Trainspotting.

Co-Curator of the event and photo journalist, Peter Dench said: “Photo North Festival are delighted to bring an inclusive, thought-provoking event to Leeds. Pop-up exhibitions and events that champion photography are designed to support and stimulate interest within the community.”

David Campbell, Alumno Managing Director and principal sponsor commented: “At Alumno, we’re deeply committed to nurturing young talent in the cities and communities where we develop. The Photo North Festival provides a rare chance for emerging photographers to gain recognition and open doors to a career in photography. Our buildings are designed to embrace and celebrate art and photography, and I’m proud to support this fantastic festival.”

“Photo North has always been one of the esteemed competitions our lecturers at Edinburgh College encouraged us to enter, learning to overcome imposter syndrome to submit an entry is the first challenge!

This was my first year visiting the festival, it really is fantastic. There were so many people to chat to in a fun and informal setting, the exhibition was excellent, and the opportunity to show your portfolio to the Channel 4 team and listen to the speakers is worth visiting in itself. To have made it to the final amongst so many other talented photographers was such a surprise and then be awarded joint runner up is still sinking in after a month. I was delighted to be offered a mentorship, which could not have come at a better time, as my BA hons comes to an end I will no longer have the support of my lectures so the timing is particularly welcome. Thanks to sponsor Alumno the finalists will have our work in a permanent exhibition in Birmingham. This is extra special as I hope the mental health stories accompanying my images will now potentially help others. Thank you to all involved for putting on such a fun and supportive event and congratulations to everyone who took part. After meaning to visit the Photo North festival for a couple of years this event will be a recurring event in my diary. “
