Work begins on £29m Alumno student accommodation scheme in Manchester
Following recent Gateway 2 approval, work is now officially underway at Alumno’s new student accommodation scheme at Moss Lane East in Manchester. A ground-breaking ceremony marked this important milestone for the development, which will be delivered by GMI Construction Group. It was attended by Alumno Managing Director David Campbell, GMI Regional Director Anthony Judge, and members of the wider project team.
The development will provide high-quality accommodation to meet the needs of the growing student population at Manchester’s universities. Designed by Stallan Brand Architects, the state-of-the-art building will feature a mix of cluster bedrooms and single-occupancy studio apartments, providing a total of 261 beds.
Completion is scheduled ahead of the 2027 academic intake, ensuring students can benefit from modern, well-designed living spaces in a prime city location.
Featuring a striking combination of brickwork and metal cladding, and overlooking Whitworth Park, the development comprises a new nine-storey building alongside the refurbishment of an adjacent listed Georgian villa. Residents will benefit from an extensive range of amenities, including private study areas, collaboration spaces, lounges, a cinema, gym, and wellbeing room.
Ideally located for students, the Moss Lane East site sits within an area well served by facilities belonging to both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester.
Alumno Managing Director David Campbell said “Our development will improve the local area through sensitive and coherent, design and planning, as well as providing an economic boost to local businesses, delivering much needed, good quality accommodation for Manchester’s student population, which includes an element of rooms set at affordable rents.
As with all our developments, we have worked closely with stakeholders and the community, to ensure the scheme enhances this vibrant neighbourhood. This will help with the recognised undersupply and demand for student housing in Manchester, for the ever evolving and growing student population and their needs”
Gareth Jones, Group Managing Director at GMI Construction Group, commented: “We have built a close relationship with our long-standing client Alumno, and we continue to develop an extensive understanding of their requirements with each project we collaborate on. Within walking distance of the campus of the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, this will be a landmark construction for the Moss Lane East District of Manchester, and once complete, it will be a big boost for the area. ”
