Sean O’Callaghan, Kier Area Operations Director, set his Project Managers and site teams the task of coming up with original ideas that can be implemented and rolled out across the business.

Our PM, Iain Gilbride, has set the bar high by becoming the first in Kier’s Northern Sector to gain a “Blue Flash” rating on our site at Powis Place, Aberdeen.

The Blue Flash rating is awarded for good practice and innovation on site.

Here’s why the idea has been recognised:

  • Hazibags are suitable for a wide range of solid hazardous wastes including COSHH waste, spill response, contaminated soil, asbestos waste and Japanese knotweed.
  • Hazibag offers substantial benefits over traditional containers such as drums, IBCs and wheeled bins. The bright orange bags are highly visible on site and encourage good practice in waste management by staff and subcontractors.
  • Empty bags are flat-packed and take up far less space in delivery and storage than traditional containers helping keep sites tidy, improving health and safety, and general housekeeping. With reinforced straps, these bags are certified for lifting and are suitable for use on roofs and other restricted access areas.
  • Over 100 flat packed Hazibags fit on a pallet taking up the space of four 200 litre drums or one IBC, greatly reducing the carbon emissions and cost of transporting hazardous waste.

Great work Iain and team – here’s to many more where that came from!
