Alumno, together with its partner the University of the Arts London, is pleased to announce the second annual “Bar-Tur” Photography Award which is dedicated to discovering the next generation of new and exciting photographic talent from amongst the University of the Arts’ current students and alumni. The University of the Arts is the leading European arts institution and is consistently ranked highly worldwide. The alumni of UAL, from Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney to Sir Terry Frost to Mike Leigh, are widely regarded as some of the most important and influential names in fashion, art, film and TV over the last 50 years.

Alumno as a co-sponsor and originator of the award would like to share some of the benefits of this very exciting project with you and believe that your company would be ideally placed to maximise its association with it.

The Award

The award’s key focus is the immense power photography has to influence and challenge the way that we understand and engage with the world around us. Founded by Amnon Bar-Tur, Director of Alumno, in memory of his late wife Ann Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984) who was herself a talented artist and graduate of Chelsea School of Art, the award aims to draw on the wealth of talent and creativity amongst the students and alumni (200,000 worldwide) of the University, which is made up of six distinct and leading London colleges.

The Olympian” theme

With the London Olympics and Paralympics fast approaching, the awards this year seek to explore what the games mean to individuals, communities and society, as we ask – what is success? And what do we consider achievement to be in the 21st century?

The winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd in a student and alumnus category), gain more than simply a cash prize – the award and its recognition undoubtedly gives highly valuable and visible exposure at a crucial time in an artist´s career as well as invaluable opportunities for networking and obtaining first hand professional and practical experience.

Through its connections to industry insiders, the Bar-Tur Award has successfully arranged work placement opportunities for the 2011 prize winners with Vogue Studios, Conde Nast Traveller Magazine, the FT Magazine as well as other leading UK publications, advertising and picture agencies.

The shortlisted artists will be revealed in June 2012. With the winners being announced at a special public exhibition and event, organised by the University of Arts, to showcase the shortlisted works in July 2012.
The Judges

Once again a leading panel of influential industry insiders, many judging for the second time this year, will decide the winners. They include:

“In a world dominated by images, the award is an opportunity to look for work of integrity and quality. The University of the Arts is delighted to be able to offer the Bar-Tur Award to its students for the second year running. Artists need as much support and guidance as possible and we are grateful to the Award for giving our students and alumni such a valuable opportunity at a crucial moment in their careers This award is fast establishing itself as a useful resource in unearthing new and exciting talent in the field. We are grateful to our partners – Amnon Bar-Tur and Alumno – for making this award a reality. It is now very much a highlight of the annual events calendar of the university .”
