Alumno are pleased to announce that planning permission was granted last week for our scheme in Bermondsey. This will be our 4th development in Southwark which will provide student accommodation for 143 people with facilities including a basement cinema lounge, study room and community area and contribute to the vibrancy of this diverse neighbourhood.
The proposal included a number of initiatives which helped secure the necessary planning permission. These were based on feedback from local residents and responses to the initial plans. The design of the scheme received positive comments, it was developed with Greenaway Architecture who are working with Alumno on other schemes.
Alumno is also collaborating with local science researcher Danny Ball on a pioneering and innovative wayfinding technology. This should meet the growing challenge people face in navigating their way through the modern built environment, which is particularly challenging for the visually impaired and hard of sight. Working with Alumno, Danny has developed a brief and technological tools to establish a network of monitors and signal links to create a Bluetooth-driven wayfinding system. This will be accessible to all local residents and visitors to the area via a smartphone app.
Alumno has worked closely with local Kintore Way Nursey and is committing to an archive project and playground improvements – refurbishing a currently unusable playground to provide facilities for disabled children.
Alumno Managing Director David Campbell said: ‘We are delighted to get the go ahead to build Ascot Road and delighted to be working in Southwark again and thank the council for approving this fantastic project. The development will not only provide much needed high-quality accommodation for the area’s student population, but also make a valuable contribution to the local community, in line with our ethos of always giving something back.’
