Alumno x Photo North#7 another fantastic festival

Leeds saw another wonderful Photo North Festival full of art displays, interesting and inspiring talks and a fantastic sense of a supporting nurturing community. Those with already successful careers in photography were genuinely thrilled to be helping the next generation secure opportunities and advice. With Alumno`s sponsorship, Photo North were able to support over 50 emerging artists, giving them a platform to share their work and connect with new audiences. It was also fantastic to see one of the student volunteers offered a job following their involvementexactly the kind of opportunity Photo North hope to create.

Photo North were especially pleased to be able to support a photography group of asylum seekers, offering them free exhibition space and entry to the festival. It was a really meaningful part of this year’s programme.

This year, we also supported young and emerging artists from multi-disciplinary arts sectors, not just photography. They were buzzing with excitement and really benefited from the exposure.

The Alumno Student Photography Competition was, as always, a real highlight and hugely valued by those taking part. The winner of the competition was Tracy Mcilhatton from the City of Glasgow College with her photos “Where life begins” a documentary exploration of pregnancy, birth and early life as  lived experience rather than an idealised narrative. Runners up were Riley Lawless and Georgia-Millie Crocker

Many visitors offered gushing compliments; one said she still thinks about the festival months later!
